Business and Dynamic Change: the Arrival of Business Architecture, will be launched at The BPM and Case Management Global Summit Washington DC, June 22-24 2015

Abstract deadline: February 11
Selection Deadline: February 20
Final Deadline for Completed Papers: April 10
Book Launch date: June 22, 2015

Background

The post-World War II era has seen the advent of many types of business models and methods of quantitative analysis. It has also seen the growth of organizations both organically and via merger or acquisition. In addition recent economic conditions have seen consolidations, divestitures, disposals and spinoffs. The digital enterprise is becoming the norm rather than the exception. Mobility and smart devices (i.e., Internet of Things) will change market dynamics. There will no longer be person-to-person or over even the phone, but through engagement via intelligent agents, and increasingly between the agents themselves.

The past 50 years have seen a number of issues evolve that confront organizations such as: transitioning from local-to-global markets and delivery points, increasing competitive pressure to streamline processes, drowning in huge amounts of disparate data with many different formats and media, assessing risk in a more complex environment, integrating operating units, government agencies and whole businesses, dealing with regulation, compliance and new types of analytics.

Understanding the business requires management use of multiple descriptive structures as a means of documenting the enterprise. For example, how the delivery of goods and services is described and documented, usually with some sort of diagram. These descriptive structures especially with their context have been called Architectures. For products, we call it a ‘product architecture’ within the product we have the ‘Bill of Materials’. For an organizational structure, we’ve got an organization chart. For a process, it’s a value chain, value stream, workflow, or process flowchart. Each is a form of architectural representation consisting of phrases and their relationships. Techniques are emerging to deal with many of these issues under a common umbrella. One of the key techniques is to view the structures of organization in terms of their components, models and relationships. This is what is meant by the structure of the organization, its Architecture.

When there are so many models and structures, something and someone is needed that understands how to put them together and analyze them. In the past, this has fallen to the management of the organization. Today, the issues and analytical methods are sufficiently complex that specialists are needed to support management. This caused the emergence of the business architect as well as other architects for data, systems, process, products, IT (enterprise architect) and so on. Rationally sound business options are assessed though the use of architects (knowledge workers) that support management for a much broader enterprise view of the totality of the organization.

To address gaps between a current structure and a future structure, management is starting to rely on architectural approaches and analytics. For example, a value chain graphic shows how the organization delivers goods and services. Architects assess various decision options by applying analytics to architecture deliverables like the value chain. The result of the application of analytics provides management with alternative structures and the risk/opportunity of each alternative.
Today with the advances caused by in-memory computing using massive amounts of data (“Big Data”), data and information architects are transforming the way business processes support customer interactions. What do these changes mean for business performance, adaptation and continuity? With all the turmoil today, Architecture must be used to ensure business systems work everywhere.

With estimates of 30 billion or more connected devices, there will be far too many devices, interactions, customer groupings, changes in consumer interest and government regulations for slow reaction time. The only way to make sense of the flow of information and rapidly adapt to the changes is to apply architecture techniques to each situation as it arises.

Launched jointly by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), Knowledge Consultants, Inc. and published by Future Strategies, Inc., “Business and Dynamic Change” will be the most important architecture book of 2015, addressing the reality of business change and adaptation. It is looking at what the impact of the different architectural approaches is having on business execution, not in some distant scenario but today!

The book will discuss critical issues currently facing architecture adopters and practitioners, such as the key roles played by architecture analytics uncovering hidden patterns and the need for process architecture management tools, algorithms and platforms to coordinate interaction and structure of the enterprise.

Experienced practitioners, experts and academics are invited to submit chapter proposals addressing the required methods, concepts, examples and technologies in place today driving Business and Dynamic Change, as well as those still needed to be defined and developed.

Topics of interest include:

  • What is the relationship between management disciplines like value chain and balanced scorecard and architecture?
  • Is there more than one type of architecture? What are they?
  • Key architecture trends in the next 5 years
  • How does architecture return value to the enterprise?
  • Enabling business change through architecture
  • The role of architecture in dynamic planning and execution
  • The relationship of business environment, business structure and architecture
  • Analytics used to assess architecture for impact of change, options and rankings
  • How does architecture support decision making?
  • What is an Enterprise IT Architecture, Business Process Architecture, Organizational Functional Architecture, Marketing Architecture, Finance Architecture, others?
  • Governing the architecture with practical approaches
  • Applying architecture to business transformation
  • Is there such a thing as Architecture as a Service (AaaS)?
  • And more… think about how architecture plays a role in managing the business
