The 2009 BPM and Workflow Handbook from the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) continues tradition as the only international definitive guide on the business of workflow and business process management.

In 2009 we include a special spotlight on "BPM in Government," illustrating the strategic role of BPM and workflow in enabling enterprise transformation and mission/IT alignment.  We welcome submissions describing initiatives at federal, state and local agencies worldwide, covering program areas such as case management, workforce planning, grants management, correspondence tracking, or acquisition management.

Preference will be given to submissions presented directly by the agency or department as opposed those written by service providers or third parties.

The papers published in this annual series are a significant contribution to the body of knowledge within this industry. The contributing authors (and their organizations) receive worldwide recognition for their respective roles as leaders at the forefront of business process technology, its growth, evolution and implementation.

The 2009 BPM and Workflow Handbook is designed as a one-stop source for organizations seeking or already committed to implementing business process systems as part of their IT and business strategy.

Abstracts:

Abstracts should be submitted by December 31, 2008 for consideration by the Review Committee and you will be notified by mid-January whether your proposal has been accepted. The final deadline for completed papers is February 22, 2009. Papers that have been published elsewhere are acceptable, as long as they conform to our guidelines and you have permission to reproduce them.

Note: All we need at this time is a SHORT abstract or description of your proposed paper (about one or two paragraphs), and a very SHORT form of your biography or CV.  We’ll get back to you immediately if we require further information. Scroll down for the submission form.

Proposals for papers are invited from all interested parties, but preference will be given to WfMC members. Membership information is here.

Spotlight on BPM in Government
In 2009 we include a special spotlight on "BPM in Government" illustrating the strategic role of BPM and workflow in enabling enterprise transformation and mission/IT alignment.  We welcome submissions describing initiatives at federal, state and local agencies worldwide, covering program areas such as case management, workforce planning, grants management, correspondence tracking, or acquisition management.

If submitting a paper on this topic, please indicate in the submission form which section best suits the content.

Section 1: The Business Value of BPM introduces new key concepts and sets out the business case for workflow technology and BPM. This perspective is covered by papers that provide practical information on Business Process Management (including case studies) designed for an audience of business users.

Section 2: Standards and Technology: The growing understanding of the role of BPM standards has evolved from technical nuance to a business imperative. This perspective is covered by papers on system structure and values, operation and scalability issues, written for an audience of Information Technology (IT) professionals. Deeply technical papers are not required, but do submit educational papers written for the IT professional.

Section 3: Appendix: A comprehensive listing of WfMC members, BPM and workflow resources and more.

We have made available as a free download the paper by Keith Swenson, TC Chair, in his paper “The Business Value of Workflow and BPM” which clarifies the distinction made by WfMC between business users and IT professionals. (Note: If you have a problem downloading this paper, please try here.)

The annual BPM and Workflow Handbook is edited by Layna Fischer, Future Strategies Inc., with the final selection of papers and content made in collaboration with the WfMC. Future Strategies Inc., publishes several other BPM-related books including the annual Excellence in Practice Series which profiles the award-winning case studies from the Global Excellence Awards for BPM and Workflow, and the BPMN Modeling and Reference Guide.
